So, Railroad Tycoon 3's renderer appears to crash when trying to use hardware T&L on Windows 10. I'm a graphics engineer originally by trade, and tried to figure it out. It seems to be a deep issue in their renderer - it's not D3D crashing.

I then tried something interesting.. the [dgVooodoo2] (http://dege.freeweb.hu/) library is a D3D11 wrapper for D3D8. Basically, it translates D3D8 operations into equivalents for D3D11, and also translates D3D8 shader binaries into D3D10.1 binaries.

Once I plugged the D3D8 libraries in the MS folder into the game folder.. the game just ran. With Hardware T&L - which does free up CPU time and made late-game run much smoother for me.

One thing to note - he has not released the source code for these on his site. While my AV suite didn't detect anything interesting, it's possible his libraries could be malicious. I cannot guarantee that they are not. However, the official forum is apparently on Vogons, so I am hopeful that it's legitimate.
